Japanese Car Makers Roar Back
Japanese auto makers' sales roared back in the U.S. last month and, unlike in years past, Detroit stuck with them by boosting sales in a market that for now appears to be defying the downdrafts threatening the broader economy.

The three leading Japanese auto makers in the U.S. on Tuesday said sales surged in June compared to an unusually weak year-ago period when supplies were disrupted by an earthquake and tsunami. Toyota Motor Corp. TM +0.87% reported a 60% sales increase for the month while Honda Motor Co. HMC +1.02% rose 49% and Nissan Motor Co. 7201.TO -0.79% posted a 28% i

Car sales stay strong as low interest rates pull in buyers
From mini cars to monster pickups, sales of new cars and trucks surged in June and eased concerns that Americans would be turned off by slower hiring and other scary headlines.

Automakers sold nearly 1.3 million cars and trucks in June, up 22 percent from the same month last year. Chrysler posted its best June in five years. Sales soared at Volkswagen, which is on track for its best year in the U.S. since 1973.

The results allayed fears that growth would stall after a strong start to 2012. In June, there was more bad news about jobs growth, and consumer confidence fell for the fourth straight month.

But buyers didn't go away. June's sales pace rose to 14.1 million, according to Autodata Corp. And if

China car makers skid on Guangzhou caps
Chinese automotive shares were lower in Hong Kong on Tuesday, with analysts warning that Guangzhou’s weekend announcement of caps on new vehicle registrations could halve the number of new cars sold in the city.

On Saturday, Guangzhou municipal officials unveiled restrictions on new car registrations saying the move was necessary to help ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution.

The restrictions, which will limit the number of new passenger car registrations at 120,000 annually, and which took effect Sunday, mean that Guangzhou is the third Chinese city to impose vehicle such caps following similar moves by Beijing and Giyang, according to the Xinhua news agency.
